Because of his passion for and commitment to excellent service, Mark McCleary, founder and president of Community Engineering Services, engaged Lannom Worldwide to provide a 12-week leadership and personal growth training program for his employees, called People First®, the program focuses on investing in people and celebrating the human spirit.
Community Engineering Services is the first civil engineering and surveying consulting company to be certified People First in the United States, As a People First® company, Community Engineering Services has two primary philosophies:
- We are guided by a meaningful philosophy of Truth in all things,
- Wisdom in all things and Excellence in all things.
- We are a corporation that truly cares about people.
People First® is a philosophy that should govern the whole world. If this were to happen I am sure it would bring the world together. People First® is being positive in a world of ever increasing negativity. The class makes you aware of how important communication is and that successful communication will make successful companies. Only companies that exemplify the value of the human spirit will make lasting impressions in the eyes of those who are most important – our families, Purpose Partners® and customers. We are all unique, yet we all require respect and dignity. It is important to recognize that employees are at their best when they feel that they are part of the team effort and are celebrated for their efforts. Our leader struggled for the missing link that would make us the best. Then a man named Jack said, "You’ve come this far let me help you with the rest." At first everyone was doubtful as they brought their vision to the team. But it wasn’t long before the Purpose Partners® faces began to beam. Our classes started with some interesting facts and a fun high five. He made us use our minds to discover our passion and our drive. He started by asking what are your values I mean really at the core. With no response he smiled and said we will discover that and much more. After weeks of patience and teaching with precision. Became the birth of our company values and vision. As Jack left we were reminded of his journeys and why company dreams burst. He said always remember it’s because they DON’T live by People First®.

I have witnessed the benefits of the People First® program at home and at the workplace. There are phrases we learned to use to empower our Purpose Partners® (fellow employees), such as: "Yes", "Thank You", "I Need You", "I Believe In You", and "I Am Proud Of You". The results of these small phrases are amazing. Throughout the course I was reminded that individuals need to be appreciated on a regular basis, and with the emphasis on People First®, you learn to pause in your daily routine to celebrate the human spirit. We learned to celebrate one another with applause and with High Fives!
