QuoteWhat would corporate life be like if people came first, diversity was celebrated and everyone felt their work and ideas were appreciated? Would profits evaporate? Or would business performance actually improve?

The radical idea of "people before profits" actually results in healthier companies that perform better, according to People First® from Lannom Worldwide. This is definitely not just another motivational program. As our KIMBERLY-CLARK PROFESSIONAL* Sales & Marketing group found during thecertification process, People First® involves approaching business from a different perspective.

We often get so caught up in brands, processes and profit projections that we lose sight of the fact that our people are our company. They're also the "face" of our company to customers, prospects and everyone else in the world.

People First® reminds us to genuinely value each person as an individual and to put people first - ahead of everything else. That means saying things that we find easy to say to our children but often find difficult to say in the workplace. Things like: Yes. Thank you. I need you. I believe in you. I'm proud of you.

As our group went through the 12-session certification, it was amazing to see people open up and respond to simple expressions of acknowledgment and appreciation. The key is that it has to be genuine. People First® philosophy emphasizes truth, wisdom and excellence in all things.

Starting with foundation values, we explored how to bring our values to life in our actions, empower employees to do the same, and create a legacy worth passing on.

Far from hurting profits, this philosophy creates an engaged, high-performance company culture that leverages the potential of every person, and makes it possible to attract and retain the best people. Improved profits are a natural result.

Even in a tough economy, these principles are strengthening our company as well as our business results. We now have energized teams of volunteers who focus on key program areas, and are determined to make People First® a continuing force at our company.

The reason is simple: it works. Today, our focus on people is a key element of our commitment to make KIMBERLY-CLARK PROFESSIONAL* a great place to do business – and a terrific place to work.Quote

David St. Hilaire - Director of Sales Channel Development KIMBERLY-CLARK PROFESSIONAL

QuoteDear Jack, I want to personally thank you for the introduction of People First to Kimberly-Clark Professional.  Your enthusiastic approach to leadership development and the awakening of the human spirit is contagious.  We found the entire program to be valuable both in the workplace and at home.

We all search for heightened business results, but when within your search you can truly impact and make a difference in the lives of your employees you have accomplished far more than can be reflected on a P&L statement.

Since our certification on February 23, 2009 we have launched People First within our Customer Service Organization, our Partnership Products division, our Marketing Services group, and in April to our Administrative Assistant team.  We are capitalizing on our momentum, and seizing the opportunity to reinforce People First® principles every day.

I thank you for your time, your talent and for PJ Bouchard.  PJ was instrumental in setting the high energy tone each and every week.  She connected with our team, and through her sincerity and strong conviction to People First, was able to pique the interest and lay the foundation for commitment in our leadership team.  The two of you make quite a dynamic team – and a team that KCP will always celebrate our connection to.Quote
Richard Thorne, Vice President, KCP North America

QuoteDear Jack, I want to thank you for the introduction of People First to Boston Scientific Miami manufacturing site.  We had been working hard at making operational improvements at our site, but heard clearly from our team that our efforts were focusing solely on the business die of things, without sufficient attention to the human side.  We knew that we couldn’t get to where we need to go strictly based on physical changes to our systems and process.  We knew that in order to truly change how we operate, we needed to capture and engage the hearts and minds of all of our employees.  And that’s where People First came in.

When our Management Team met you in November 2008 and listened to what People First was about, and felt your passion and enthusiasm about People First, we knew that it could be a major component of our cultural change efforts.  We are proud to be People First certified and are now working to incorporate our learnings about People first into systems and processes and how we work each day.  The certification program is over, but People First lives on in Miami!

We also would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to PJ Bouchard, who demonstrated a passion for People First equal to your own.  She connected with the management team and kept the momentum going over the 12 week course period. We are honored to have met and worked with both of you.Quote
Noel Fogarty VP Operations, Boston Scientific

QuoteI whole heartedly endorse your philosophy of honoring, valuing, and celebrating the human spirit as the new economics of the 21st century.  Your message of PEOPLE FIRST® is so timely for the whole world in light of the fact that so many are; sacrificing ethics for earnings, human life for high profit and greatness for greed.  PEOPLE FIRST® is a clarion call to bring the world back to what truly makes every nation wealthy, which is building lives and passing on an enduring legacy of truth in all things, wisdom in all things, and excellence in all things.  Jack, until we get your PEOPLE FIRST® MESSAGE, we are doomed to living impoverished lives, both morally and financially.Quote

The most successful companies are in a constant state of helping personal growth develop from the owner all the way to the person who started with the company yesterday. I will recommend People First to every one of my clients and also suggest that they do as I have, and pass it on to every member of their family! People First is not a "how to" it's a "why" for life. QuoteCongratulations Jack Lannom... and Thank You! for your book. Indeed, People First is the answer, and like the martial arts master you are- and the story your books tells- you have wonderfully demonstrated the principles and practical’s of what it takes to transform our organizations and ourselves by putting people first. One caution to readers: Many of you will have the tendency to thoroughly enjoy Jack's entertaining read, but miss his point(s). Why? Because it is so simple... too simple. Don't be fooled. Mr. Lannom knows what's so and what he has written works. You can feel it! So, Jack Lannom, 'I am proud of you'. You've written a terrific book that's right on, well done and a real and lasting contribution. I will read your book again in six months and be amazed how much it's changed :-)Quote

QuoteOur business environment usually teaches us to deal with things at an organizational level first. QuoteJack Lannom and People First are right on target with where Leadership needs to go…now. Leading with a people before profits mentality will lead to greater profits through an outstanding culture of trust by valuing the people that produce the profit. QuoteI just wanted to give you an update on how your classes and you have changed my life. I want to thank you first of all because every class I attended, you went out of your way to make each one of us feel special. I look at so many things with a different aspect since your training. It has made me realize how we take so many things for granted in life and make so many unfair assumptions. For many years I went through life feeling like I was missing something and now because of you I know what it was. What I was missing was right in my own home, my family I spent so much time worrying about work and rushing trying to balance everything and everyone and you made me realize that unless you are happy and balanced at home it will not follow through in business. I think so many of us are trying so hard to be successful that we forget about the major achievements we have already accomplished and that is our family. I never realized what a leaders role I was playing at home and I never thought about the type of legacy I would leave behind or if I would even leave one at all. I have always tried to be a good person but I really find myself stopping to think before I act and really caring so much more about peoples feelings than I did in the past. I ask myself so many questions now and find myself skimming through the pages of the books you so graciously presented to us to help me find the answers. I just wanted you to know that I feel I am a much more caring and gracious leader now not only at work but definitely at home. Thank you so much Jack from the bottom of my heart for helping me find what I was missing. Please don't ever lose the passion you have for people. I hope you know what a powerful person you are, you really do put people first. God Bless!Quote

Darlene Sarmiento, Sales / Service Manager, Riverside Bank

QuoteI just wanted to let you know how very much I enjoyed 'People First"!!! I have been through numerous leadership classes in the past 25 years, but this is the first class that ddressed all of the things that are truly important in life (both business and personal). I found myself listening to you and hearing many of the same things I have said over the years to my bosses at some of the 'big banks'. Saying those things to them was like talking to a brick wall. It was very refreshing to hear it presented by you with all of your nthusiasm for life. I learned so much more than I ever thought possible. I have used many of the techniques at home with my family, particularly my son, daughter-in-law and granddaughter. At work I am really trying to use the pyramid daily with my co-workers. I always think those things, but I am really trying to verbalize them everyday. We have really noticed a difference in many of our Purpose Partners™ already. I am hoping that we can continue to grow our personal relationships with all of our Purpose Partners™ (both internal and external) and make Riverside Bank an even stronger community bank than we already are. We just got the news that we were voted 'Best of the Cape'. Two of our ssociates were also voted 'Best of the Cape' for financial planner and mortgage originator.

Again, thank you for sharing all of your wisdom with us here at Riverside. The world will be a better place if we take all that you have taught us and spread it to everyone we touch daily. Thank you and God bless.Quote

Jacque Sanders,Riverside Bank

QuoteI think I set out to find a way to open up my heart, but I do not think I achieved that. I am a little closed by nature....OK, very closed. I don't often open up. The class has, owever, made my heart and my mind more aware of my environment and those who live and work in it. I believe my level of sensitivity to others is up significantly, as is my knowledge of how I affect others, as a result of your class. All in all, for me the class was worth it.Quote

Richard Anthony Hull, EVP/Chief Lending Officer,Riverside Bank

QuoteI enjoyed this course immensely. It offered an opportunity to reflect, not only on my career, but on my personal life, as well. Although I am not in a leadership position with Riverside, I feel that this course enabled me to become a leader for the future. I was able to absorb much of the valuable information that you shared with us and look orward to sharing with others. I appreciate your caring nature and responsiveness.

Erin Casale, Loan Review Assistant, Quality Control Credit Department, Riverside Bank

QuoteThanks so much for taking the time to educate and train our team on Leadership skills. I have thoroughly enjoyed the sessions and am sure they will enable us as a team to grow immensely as a family unit first and secondly as an organization.Personally, I have learned to make a conscious effort to "appreciate" the good things people do in our lives and take that home with me and practice this there first on a ersonal level which allows me to be more of a "nice" person as well in the workplace.

I believe the course has allowed me to be more of a "positive" thinker and to focus more on the good side of what people have inside them. Thanks, again, Jack for all you have done and the time commitment you have made to us personally and on an organizational level. I APPRECIATE YOU !!!Quote

Randall Graber, Riverside Bank

QuoteConcerning what I got from your "People First Leadership Class", I believe everyone walked away with something different. For some it was very intense and personal, for thers it was an increased awareness, and for others still, it was a door to living life differently and with a more positive vigor.

For me, I believe I have come away from the experience with a more acute awareness of how I affect others, either positively or negatively. I tend to not see myself as a particular big deal, and therefore haven't paid that much attention to a variety of behaviors, good or bad. Now I see that, no matter how I see myself, others have a perception of me, or at least a perception of what I'm supposed to be. Therefore, I need to pay attention to things I say and do, and to how I manage and lead people. I need to be careful that I don't slight someone by ignoring him/her, that I don't fail to recognize excellent work, that I don't fail to mentor and coach, and that I don't fail to practice what I preach.Quote

Richard Anthony Hull, EVP, Chief Lending Officer, Riverside Bank

QuoteDear Jack: It was an awesome pleasure and privilege for our company to participate in your People First Leadership training program. With the People First book you brought to light the things that all of us desire to receive from others but fail to do for others. We all desire to be honored and validated with words and actions of encouragement; but oh how we often fail to do so for others. You have given us a fresh understanding of how important it is to honor one another and speak positively into each other’s lives daily.

The principles for effective leadership that you have taught in the leadership program have given us a firm foundation to build from. Being able to come together as a company of "purpose partners" to establish our core values and declare our mission has strengthened us in so many ways. Knowing and agreeing on our core values makes the decision process very easy; when we measure things according to those values and decide accordingly, success is guaranteed. This program has given us great continuity while establishing lines of accountability that challenge us to pursue excellence in everything we do.
Jack, you have been successful in communicating real truth to us through your book and leadership program. Thank you for demonstrating to us these principles which produce good fruit within our organization almost immediately. This stuff works because it is the truth, it is wisdom, and it only promotes excellence.

We owe you a debt of gratitude and we say to you: We are proud of you, we believe in you, we need you, we thank you and YES! We pray for your continued success with the book and the program, for we know that they will help to make this world a better place. With warmest regards.Quote

Thanks to you, I know there was a lot of worthwhile “take home value” and relationship building. I’m sure that given your background and experience, you could sense that we are fortunate to have a group of wonderful, dedicated and talented people. You very clearly helped us unify our Statement of Values, which I know will be extremely helpful for all of us, both now and in the future. Hello Jack, Unfortunately, I will not be attendance for the final People First session this Friday to personally thank you for introducing the People First Leadership Model to me.

I always considered myself a “People First” kind of person throughout my leadership career at Iron Mountain.  However, I came to realize that I was falling short on the People First principles in my personal environment.

Your People First Leadership Program:

  • Gave me the wisdom to understand that People First principles should begin at home
  • Provided the skills to positively change the negative behaviors entrenched in me

The result has been a sense of peace that I have not felt in a really long time.

“Thank you for that Jack”!

Shane Wentz | Operations Manager | Iron Mountain

Jack, words cannot adequately convey the tremendous impact that you and the People First program has made to us at Iron Mountain. Your strategies and success model is making a positive and life-changing impact for the entire leadership team, resulting in a more empowered organization. All levels are quickly adopting the People First culture, resulting in stronger morale and productivity in our workforce.

Jack, on a personal level, you have become the single greatest mentor in my career. My team is fired up and united with a laser focus on achieving our daily mission and vision goals. You have taught me to become a CCO (Chief Celebration Officer) and how to become a powerful role-model in both my personal and professional life.

The People First program should be implemented in every organization in the country. The return on investment will be exponential in terms of leadership development, employee morale, and workforce productivity. In addition, every individual should read Jack’s book, ‘People First – Building Lives And Passing On a Legacy’. Unquestionably, it is one of the greatest leadership books every written.
Jack, you are a world-class leader, teacher, and friend.

I am proud of you!
I Believe In You
I Need You
Thank You

Jack Lannom, People First has been a riveting experience. I have been through some phenomenal leadership classes in my life, but none were as intensely focused on my internal awareness and development as People First. I found the People First approach of challenging me to dig deep into my own personal values and motivations as a freeing way to look at the untapped potential I have as an ever growing leader.

I am a better person, leader, father and husband as a result of my experiences in the People First program. I am confident that everyone I meet from this day forward will benefit from everything that I was fortunate enough to learn in this program. I am humbled, grateful and inspired following my completion of People First.

Brian Bergen | Business Support Supervisor | Iron Mountain

Dear Jack, I have enjoyed the weekly sessions of the People First training. It has certainly opened my eyes as to my interactions every day with people from my wife and kids all the way through to strangers on the street.

I read your book before I met you in New Jersey back in March, and the book was very enlightening as to how I communicate. It opened up an important door for me to share what I learned, and more importantly allowed me to admit what I saw I was doing wrong. As you suggested, I started my change at home with Mrs. Poublon giving my undivided attention and focus when we would have a discussion. One of the last things you said when we were leaving New Jersey is, “Are you going to go home and share this with your wife?” That one sentence for some reason clicked with me just as important as giving her my complete attention. I don’t share my work life with her nearly as much as I should. Post People First training, once the kids go to bed we will sit and talk about what happened that day, exciting or not. We do that before we read the paper, or turn the TV on, flip thru the mail, or before I dive back into my laptop. We did some of the exercises together as other Mountaineers had mentioned. Our family Core Values was done together, and then each one of the 10 items we decided on was read to us by our 6 year old at breakfast the next day. It gave us the opportunity to explain what each word or phrase meant and allowed us to tell both he and his brother why they were important to his mother and I. That poster, which my wife made, is a drawing of a big strong tree with 10 branches that represent our 10 values. The Poublon Family Values. It hangs on our kitchen wall, as you enter or exit our home. Good stuff. I’ve passed that exercise, and some other things I’ve gathered to my other family members and some purpose partners here. The name remembering was also a very important exercise for me, especially since I coach Soccer and Baseball for my kids and meet so many parents. I’ve seen the importance and appreciation of that skill when working with the parents all spring.

The communication at work has had the same transformation. I believe the fortunate few that had gone through the class want to continue the methodology for our counterpart’s right down to our teams. For me, there is much more focus and attention around my teams. I never multi task when someone makes the time for me. I find myself digging into people’s potential more trying to forward pull, which I thought was a great message during the training, and I’ve seen the appreciation of people because of the common courtesy of good listening. The other key catch phrase that I plan to share is you can’t impart what you don’t possess. If you don’t have the ingredients within you, it’s not going to work. People have to believe and want to share and bolster others around them for the philosophy to grow. I have my notes from the class that I have created a template full of bullets for me to consistently look at as reminders. One of other great aspects was during the training; I would hear pieces of a subject matter and immediately have a person in mind that may need some coaching with that thought process. It gave some direct purpose to going and making mention to the individual, create a short/long term action plan and make positive change. Again, staying with it and following through has to be done or it’s all for not. Some of the other things like the tennis ball conversationalist, what type of boss are you when you enter/leave the room, body language, celebrating, critical vs. encouraging, not interrupting someone’s thought, learning patterns, kill switches all have value that I have shared with my teams.

Some of the short kind gestures to people outside my direct touch has shown to be a real positive aspect as well. I don’t quite go to some of the lengths that you describe yourself doing, but I do make a very conscious effort to anyone that I engage whom I don’t know. One big takeaway as I already mentioned was with the parents from the teams that I coach. Those relationships showed to be very valuable both ways by the time the seasons ended and also within my community since the season has ended. I’ve always been pretty sociable, but the small gestures of engagement can always improve ad I believe I have taken that aspect away and practice with regularity.

I am thankful for my company to put the resources in place to allow me the opportunity for the pilot program. I will practice what I have learned and share the philosophy with my purpose partners throughout my small piece of Iron Mountain. Thank you.
